365 days through US

I am starting research for a 365 day tour of the bottom 48 starting in 2013. I'm needing help and advice in planning a route. I currently reside in Indianapolis, IN. I'm hoping I can start my route from here. I will spend a week in each state setting up a home base in a 1st or 2nd class city then travel from there to the surrounding areas not exceeding a 2 hour radius.
The idea behind the 365 day project. I am wanting to travel every state in 365 days, running workshops (night photography/long exposure/ light painting) along the way. Also, I would like to participate in as many art festivals as possible to sell work and photograph major abandoned locations throughout the US. There are a lot of factors involved in this journey. I'm hoping for a rough route that will get me started looking in those areas to see if they have the resources needed for a successful project.

Please ask questions, not only to gain a semi accurate route but also to give me things to think about so this journey is successful I have prepared accordingly.

I would think that the schedule of art festivals would, at least in some degree, dictate your travel schedule and your route. So you might start with the schedule and a good USA map, and see what you can plot along the way. I would also get a copy of Workamper News and/or similar publications, as they can guide you in the line of working your way across the country. There are RV'ers that do this type of thing often, and while we never recommend absolutely leaning on that income to get across the country, it sure can be tried for supplemental income.

On what criteria is it decided which is a first class and which is a second class city? Size? Geographic importance? Political importance? Historical? or???

And who makes that decision?

Lincoln Highway celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2013 and there is always Route 66.

Make it a linear trip.

population classifies but reading further about classes it's only certain states that have classification statutes. Example, the cities in Minnesota are classified by population for legislative purposes.
First class: Cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants. Once a city is in the first class, it is not reclassified unless its population decreases by 25 percent from the census figures that last qualified the city as first class.
Second class: Cities with a population between 20,001 and 100,000
Third class: Cities with a population between 10,001 and 20,000
Fourth class: Cities with not more than 10,000 inhabitants.

So, maybe that was a poor way of saying larger cities would be better. As far as who makes the decision, IDK. ;)

That is great info on the 100 yr anniversary of the Lincoln highway RoadDog. I have to hit all 48 states or it wouldn't be worth it to me.

some cities will be changed depending on scheduling workshops or festivals. the north east coast is giving me the most trouble and thats probably where i'll start. if you have any ideas on something a little more gas efficient i'm all ears.
