New York to New Orleans and Back Again!

New York to New Orleans and back! Some colleagues and I will be embarking on a road trip from New York to New Orleans on the 16th October 2011. We have to be in New Orleans for a film festival on the 21st and we have tentatively planned our route via Baltimore, Nashville and Memphis. The return leg we'd like to take a different route obviously and wondered if any of the forum had any suggestions? We are travelling to the US from Scotland and will be shooting a road movie on our travels so we'd like to visit some interesting destinations! Thanks in advance.
