Hello and welcome to the RTA forums !
We don't do 'best' or 'must see' as it is your interests that matter and we know nothing of them. Having no idea how long you have in Cali doesn't help either, but it's not unusual for trips from Cali to end up including Arizona [Grand canyon] and Nevada, [Vegas] or even Utah given the time. It is a very popular topic on the forums and you will find Lot's of info by digging around a bit. San Fran to LA on the coastal Highway, San Diego, Death valley, Yosemite and Sequoia NP's are a few of the favorites in California and would appear on most 'wish lists'.
Have a look around and when you have figured some basics out we can help fill in the blanks.
I am considering a trip to California from Maine. I was wondering if anyone knew of the best way to get there that is fairly scenic? I would love to see as many attractions as possible but I still want to be heading in the general California direction. I was considering taking Route 66 but I am not sure if there are better options. There are so many different ways to get to California I am not really sure where to start. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would be greatly appreciated.

Hi kerbyjonsonjr,
From Oklahoma City to Barstow, CA most of your driving will be on Interstate 40. Which is a nice route with interesting things to see and do along the way. Petroglyphs National Monument just west of Albuquerque, NM. Painted Desert & Petrified Forest National Parks Meteor Crater, Walnut Canyon National Monument, Wupatki National Monument, Sunset Crater and of course the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.
I-70 from Denver to I-15 in western Utah is one of my favorite sections of Interstate. Hwy 50 though Nevada has a lot of interesting stops too. This route takes you past Rocky Mountain National Park, Vail, Colorado National Monument in Colorado. Scenic Byway Hwy 128, Moab, Utah and near by Arches and Canyonlands National Park, the San Rafael Swell or detour down to Goblin Valley and Capitol Reef National Parks in Utah. If you are hading to Southern California you can head down scenic Hwy 12 to Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument, Bryce Canyon National Park, and Zion National Parks in Utah.
If you are heading to the San Francisco area you can travel Hwy 50 in Nevada which has Charcoal Ovens State Park, Hickison Summit Petroglyphs, Sand Mountain, Pony Express Stations, & Grimes Point Petroglyph Trail. Once in California you have Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park.
How long do you have for this trip and where in California are you heading?
