Three of us are planning a road trip later this month, from northern VA to Charleston, SC to Savannah, GA to Atlanta, GA to Asheville, NC and back to VA. We are going for 9 days, spending one full day in each city. I'm looking for some ideas of places that we can stop and see along the way that won't add tons of extra time to the driving but still be a short break from the driving.

Certainly there are plenty of quick, refreshing stops along all major highways in the U.S., but given that you have two full 'spare' days left after accounting for your time in the cities and the time needed to drive between them, I'd also suggest that you look at a moderate detour and take the coastal route from northern Virginia down to Charleston and sample the Outer banks, some ferry rides, and the Grand Strand.
