So my friend is going away to the Marines, and we're hungry for a new destination to go to, sort of a farewell road trip. We are right now trying to think of destinations in the midwest (We live in Chicago), a restaurant, famous, or not, it doesn't really matter, just a place that has excellent food. We're open to pretty much any kind of food, but we are trying to stay within the midwest, nothing too far out of the way. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
You can do this close to home. Go to the Prime Quarter. There are 4 locations - Princeton IL, Madison WI, Janesville WI, and Green Bay WI.
You get to pick out and grill your own steaks. 20 bucks includes all the trimmings (salad bar, baked potato, Texas toast), the steaks are huge and excellent quality.
If you want to combine this with some other activities, even a Bears fan should take a tour of Lambeau Field and the Packers Hall of Fame.
I've got to say that GLC's answer is a perfect example of why this kind of question is so hard to answer.
Nothing against Prime Quarter, as the Grill Your Own certainly qualifies as a unique concept and I do know people who really like them, but out of the Dozens great restaurants in Madison, for example, Prime Quarter didn't even cross my mind. Part of that is the "grill your own" doesn't really appeal to me (I'll just make it at home on my own grill if I want that!) but the bigger factor is that I can think of lots and lots of restaurants that serve excellent food and are unique in some way.
Pretty much every city of significant size is going to have some sort of unique restaurant with good food. That's why there are so very many TV shows showcasing restaurants with unique creations. With the target of "The Midwest" and really nothing else to go on, you're talking about a very very big target.
Wouldn't the local travel advisory bureau (whatever they are called) be able to give an accurate and up to date answer to your question?
Michael is, of course, totally correct. However, you guys are in Chicago, which is going to have the widest selection of restaurants anywhere in the Midwest - after all, it's the 3rd largest city in the country. The Prime Quarter came to mind as a concept that Chicago does not have to the best of my knowledge. For that matter, there are some really nice restaurants in the Chicago suburbs that I can recommend if that's all you are looking for, I lived in the western burbs for 35 years.
Perhaps you should approach this a bit differently - research someplace you want to go for a better reason than just a good restaurant - THEN research what restaurants are available.
