We plan on driving in a modified circle from Los Angeles through:
San Diego
Las Vegas
Salt Lake City
Yellowstone NP
Helena
Spokane
Victoria BC
Olympia
Salem
Eureka
Carson City
Yosemite
Los Angeles
We can also start in Seattle if that is a better option.
Start in late May - finish in early July, 2011.
Any advice on useful sites, great places to stay or view would be most welcome. We are retired Australians, and will be collecting a rental car in either Seattle or Los Angeles.

With 5 or 6 weeks to 'play' with you won't be short on options. You will find Lots of great info throughout the RTA site [check tool bars above] and the Map centre can be used to create routes, add your own 'Custom places' and search the Library of Roadtrip attractions along the way.
From Vegas at the beginning of your trip, I would consider heading further East to the Grand canyon South rim and up through Utah towards SLC/Yellowstone. A list of a few possible places on the way would be Monument valley, Antelope canyon, Zion NP, Bryce canyon, and possibly include Arches and Canyonlands near Moab.
Towards the end of your trip I would most definitely include a Trip to San Francisco from Yosemite and then head South down the coast around Big Sur on CA1.
In between all that, there are another 'million and one' possibilities, so I would just dig around a little more to find places of interest between 'place to place' on your list, [and a little further afield] add a few more dots to the map and develop an estimated 'timeline'.
