I am planning a fall road trip with my friends from st louis to NYC and I'd love some advice on great places to visit. We are all college students, so we don't have much money, but I love places that have a down to earth, home vibe to them.

Seeing "places that have a down to earth, home vibe to them" and spending a lot of money are certainly not antithetical, but seeing such places while in a hurry certainly are. If you can devote three or more days to the drive then you can pretty much eschew the Interstates for highways that will let, not to say force, you to spend time meandering through just such venues. Basically, I would suggest that you follow the Ohio River and the old National Road rather than I-70. Start out using US-50 to Cincinnati then US-52 upriver to Huntington followed by OH-7 to Parkersburg. At that point it's back on US-50 to US-219 in Maryland up to US-40 down the Potomac to Hagerstown, then MD-64/MD-77 through Catoctin Mountain National Park to US-15 north to Harrisburg and US-422/US-222/US-22 to as close as you want to get to NYC before hopping on I-78 to complete your journey.
You should get some good maps or a detailed atlas to see what is along or near that route, especially state parks with campgrounds, but a few of the things you'll find are: George Rogers Clark National Historical Park in Vincennes, IN; Hoosier, Wayne and Monongahela National Forests;Fort Frederick in Big Pool, MD; Camp David (but it's not accessible, of course); Gettysburg; and Hershey, PA.
