Solo motorcycle road trip, summer 2011
Hey RTA! This is my first thread here, I'm at the bare stages of planning my first ever road trip. I intend to travel around the country via the coasts/borders. Starting from my homecity of NY to Seattle, Wa. Los Angeles, CA. Miami, FL. Then back Up to NY. I intend to last about a month on this journey. I'm curious as to what bike would b ideal for such a trip. I'll be staying at hostels & of course sightseeing & such. I'd like to know what there is to see & experience besides the mainstream attractions so anything even a rock you thought was neat please share. ALL opinions are welcome nothing is intrusive.
As Comfortable, Solid, and Comfortable as You Can Get
Welcome aboard the RoadTrip America Forums!
You are looking at a minimum of 7,500 miles to complete your proposed trip. I'd make sure that whatever bike I got was extremely comfortable. None of those cool looking bikes where you ride hunched over or practically lying down on your belly. When you have to cover nearly 300 miles each and every day, comfort is the name of the game - there's a reason all those touring Harleys look the way they do. Which brings us to the next requirement. You simply can't afford a bike that has any chance of breaking down, and it will need the muscle to get over the continental divide twice, cross deserts, and handle rain, wind and freezing temperatures with aplomb. No wimpy 125 cc town scooters. Such bikes are not cheap. They approach the cost of some small cars. Once you find your transport we can offer some tips on venues, but such advice is already on these forums in abundance.
