If it were making this trip, it might be worth coming back down highway 60 to visit Helen. It is by far one of my favorite places in the mountains. Helen is a small German Village with white water rafting, outdoor dining and one of the best Octoberfest in the South. If you broke it up in to 2 days it would also give you a chance to visit Tallulah Falls which is magnificent in the fall. You can find reasonable accommodations in nearby. If you've got a some money ti burn, you could find a Airbnb on the emerald green waters of Lake Burton.
