CT to CA for 2011
Hi everyone!
I'm planning a road trip for the summer of 2011. I wanted to start planning way in advanced to make sure I have time for booking camp sites/hotels, and to save plenty of money. At the time of travel I will be 19 and my friend who will come with me will be 18. I have a few questions...
1. What is the law for booking hotel rooms or campground sites??? If you don't have your own credit card, can someone else book the room/site in their name, and you pay in cash when you get there? I don't wan to spend every night in the car haha
2. How much do you think it'll cost? Since we're literally driving cross-country, we'll probably be gone for at least 2-3 weeks. I would just like to know a rough estimate so we know how to go about saving money as time progresses.
That's it for now... because it's so early in the planning stages I don't have many specific questions, but I'll be sure to ask them when the time comes! Thanks!

variables
Welcome to the RTA Forum!
Campsites you usually won't need a credit card, but with motels, you will need plastic in your name. However, you can get by with a Debit Card, just know you may need a little extra money in your account in case they "hold" a deposit which can take a little while to be released. In fact, with the new credit card rules that took effect this week, that may be about your only option.
For the rest of your planning and your budget, it is going to depend on a number of variables. First, the length of time you'll be on the road is perhaps the biggest. If you want to go all the way to California, you really need 3 weeks, as 2 weeks would really only give you time to drive there, turn around, and drive straight back home.
Beyond that your biggest factors will be fuel, lodging , food, and entertainment/fun costs. Obviously, most of those things are in your control, what you drive, where you stay, how you eat, etc. A very rough estimate would be about $3500 total, but you'd get a much better number by trying to work out the numbers yourself using some estimates based on how you will travel.
