Hello!
Four of us are traveling to LA from Chicago right after thanksgiving! There will not be a return trip as two of the passengers live in LA and the other two are flying back to Chicago. If any of you have any tips on what to see along route 55, 45, 40 etc please let us know.
We expect to be on the road only 4 days max so most of what we see will need to be along the way.

You are right in thinking you won't be able to go far off the main route, and 4 day's is the minimum we would recommend for this trip. With time to take short breaks for food, bathroom and to stretch your legs, plus filling up with gas you are likely to be on the road for 9-10 hours a day, and that's without allowing for the possibility of any weather disruption. For overnight stops I would be looking at possible places around Springfield/Joplin MO, Amarillo TX, Winslow AZ and then onto LA.
