From D.C. to Memphis

I am taking a road trip from Washington, D.C., to Memphis starting tomorrow. I am looking for unusual sites to see, places to eat and places to stay between D.C. and Memphis. What states should I go through? I want to find places off the beaten path. And I'm on a budget. Just $500 round-trip! Can you help? Thanks!

How long do you have for this trip and what sorts of things "off the beaten path" are you looking for?

Have you picked a route yet? A word of warning, if you're planning to take I-40 across the TN/NC state line, you're looking at a major detour.

I'm planning a similar trip this fall. What route did you end up taking and did you see anything of particular interest?
