Road trip around New York State

My family and I are trying to come up with a fairly inexpensive vacation, and we thought that we would plan a road trip around New York State. We would be starting in Syracuse, NY, and would like to end there. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions about where to go. We would be staying in hotels along the way.
