Moving from Houston To Chicago

We would be moving from Houston to Chicago in early august. The tough part is that we would have a U-haul truck with our SUV behind it. We have a 3-year old and this is my first time moving such a distance.

So, I am kind of apprehensive to take this trip, but friends say that if planned well the road trip can be kind of fun and economical as I dont have to hire movers.

I am concerned about the flooding and inclement weather. Do you think that should be a concern?

Upon reading other threads, I gather that I can take the interstate or US-59. to get out of Texas. Following that I understand that I can take the interstate right through to Chicago. Is my understanding right?

Would you suggest the interstate considering I would have a U-haul with a vehicle behind it?

I've driven the UHaul pulling car combo, and it can be a little intimidating if you aren't used to driving such a massive rig.

I think I'd stick to the interstates If I were you. I haven't driven US-59, so I can't speak to its condition, but on the Interstate you can stay in the right lane and drive as slow as you need to get comfortable. You don't have to worry about blocking other traffic, slowing down and stopping in towns, cross traffic, etc. Also when you are on the interstate, you will have not problem finding fuel for your rig without worrying about how you will manuver into the sometimes small spaces of a local gas station. If you stick with truck stops, you'll have plenty of room to pull up to the tank.

As far as flooding goes, its just way too soon to know what kind of conditions you'll be dealing with come August. The current situation should have subsided, but any number of other things could pop up between now and then.
