Best Routes Sf to Vegas

Hi
Plan to stay in Sf for 3 days..one of the days we plan to take a day trip to San Jose (to meet family) carry on to Santa Cruz, Carmel & Monterey...have to head back to SF by evening. Whats the best route and which places should be stop?

Also pls suggest to us the best routes in terms of scenic and shortest routes from: (if poss could give us approx time or distances)
-Napa Valley to Lake Tahoe
-Lake Tahoe to Yosemite

Any recommended "must see places" during these trips??

My husband and me are travelling to San F. in Sept 07 around the 22nd. We are going to be driving around To Napa, Lake Tahoe and San Jose on diff. days. After Lake Tahoe we plan to move to Yosemite Park, stay one night there. Next day we plan to head to Vegas - we have to be there by 3 pm to drop off the car. I understand that the drive will be 8+ hours and it will be only one person driving (all over)...do you think that it would be a v long day or shud we drop the car at Fresno and fly to Vegas...not to save time but to be more relaxed.?

Also if we do decide to drive all the way, whats the best route to take - shud we go via Death Valley and stop over there just for an hour or so...will that make sense?? Or shud we take another route (any shorter route)??
