Seattle to Boston via Route 2- early September

Hi- Anyone have any suggestions as to how to approach US Route 2- any particularly good places to stop, places to eat, things to see, etc.? This is primarily a moving trip, although I have 9 days to do it. I know the general scenery is supposed to be amazing, but if there are any highly recommended places let me know. It would be great to get some bed and breakfast contacts (so long as they are relatively cheap). Also, there is a little section of it that crosses into Canada, anyone have any experience with that strip?

While I haven't done it all, I have done fairly large chunks of US-2 (and nearby roads) and I think you're in for a great adventure. Congratulations, by the way, on eschewing the Interstates for the more relaxed pace of the (mostly) two lane blacktop. The road generally travels through some ruggedly beautiful countryside, but will seem quite lonely at times, so be prepared. A few of the more interesting stops along (and off) the way are North Cascades National Park (off US-2, but worth the side trip), Glacier National Park (absolutely take Going to the Sun Road rather than staying on US-2), and Apostle Islands National Lakeshore (you'll have to leave the highway, since these are off-shore islands). With 9 days, you will have time for both these side trips and the slower speeds of the road you've chosen. The gap in US-2 is more than a 'little section'. US-2 stops in Saulte Ste. Marie in northern Michigan and does not pick up again until Rouses Point in far northeastern New York. In its stead, the Trans-Canada Highway makes a great alternative along the northern fringes of Lake Huron and down the Ottawa River, although the area around the mining districts of Sudbury and North Bay will be distinctly less scenic than the rest of the trip. I also like B&B's, but they do require more planning. You typically can't just roll into town and book one on the fly like you can a motel room. If you want to make use of these cozier establishments, you're going to pretty much have to figure out where you're going to be each night and surf the web to find a place and pre-book it.
