i am moving from philadelphia to portland oregon in the first week of sept 2007. i have no strict time schedule, and no plans execept tp enjoy myself and see as much cheesiness and americana as i can, as well as the beautiful stuff. any suggestions on where to go and what to see? i have no idea what is out there, also, i have heard both good and bad about I-80 but do not know if i should take that or an alternative. i am open to any and all suggestions.

Do you really have an unlimited timeframe?If so, then your options are virtually unlimited.
I-80 is a perfectly good option, and it would be the most direct option. Its charms are a little more subtle than some of the other East-West interstates, but its still got plenty of things to enjoy.
I guess if I were you, I'd focus on a couple highlights that are your biggest priorities to see, and then build your trip around them.
