What's everyones favorite portable GPS units? (Ones you can take from car to car)
I have the Garmin Quest (the original) which I like a lot. It is a bit limited because you can't expand the memory (128MB) - so you have to bring a computer to upload street-level maps if you're doing a big trip.
To give you an idea of how much the unit can store:
on the east coast it covers from Richmond, VA to Boston, MA
on the west coast it covers from San Francisco to San Diego with Las Vegas, NV
The unit also has a US continental base map which will give you navigation on the interstates but no POIs or street-level detail. So you're not absolutely stranded if you can't upload maps.
Granted, I got this for free when my brother upgraded to another unit. Friends of mine have Magellans and Tom Toms. Overall, all the name-brand units are good - it really comes down to the features you want.
Thanks for the info. I found out we have a couple of similar Garmins here at where I work for our cars. They seem to like them as well, but I think they are much higher end models, they said in the $800-900 range.
