Cleveland, Oh area to San Diego

I plan on driving from Cleveland to San Diego the second week of October via I-80 then down through Denver. I'm wonder what I may find in the way of snow that time of the year between Denver and Grand Junction on I-70. If the roads are normally hazardous through that area I could very well drive the southern route, and avoid Colorado completely. Do they keep that section of road in good condition when it snows? I hate icy road driving !
I would really like to drive through Colorado however for the scenery and drive back to Ohio via the southern routes.

Any suggestions or comments on the road conditions I might find driving the northern route to San Diego ? I've just got some concerns about Colorado.
I figured on 4 1/2 days of driving to get to San Diego.

You should be fine. There is a chance you'd see snow through the Rockies, but you're still traveling early enough that the odds would say you'll be fine. Even if there has been some snow or ice, the interstates are usually the first to be cleared.

However, if you are concerned, I'd take a look at the weather report as you reach Central/Western Nebraska. If they are getting bad weather in Colorado, you can always stay on I-80 all the way to Salt Lake City. You'll sacrifice some great mountain views, but you won't have to worry about losing a significant amount of time.

Your suggestion to Salt Lake sounds like a good plan "B" if needed. We will be staying the night in Ogallala Neb. and can decide after checking the weather from there.
