Chicago to New York 3 days in October

Hi guys,

I'm after advice as I am on quite a tight schedule. I am giving myself 3 days to travel from Chicago to New York by car with a friend. It will be a Monday to Wednesday inclusive. I have prior committments in Chicago, and will then have 2-3 days in New York before returning home (Sydney, Australia).

We are both runners, and like the mountains. So the question is, what is there particularly nice to do/stay between Chicago and New York. I hear Boston is nice but would like to see some good countryside/wilderness if possible (and go for 2-3 hour trail runs). Anywhere particularly nice at this time of year? We are happy to drive a reasonable bit further than straight route if required.

Thoughts/ideas?

One possibility that would seem to be right up your alley, would be to check out New River Gorge in West Virginia. Its a little out of the way, but I think given 3 days to make the trip, you would have time for the detour. You also might have time to check out Shenandoah National Park in Virginia or any of the many other interesting areas of te Appalachians.

Another possibility would be to check out Niagara Falls, and then do a little exploration in the Adarandacks in New York State.
