Driving from DC to San Francisco in May. Been quoted a $500 one way drop-off fee from 7 or 8 rental firms. Anyone know of a company that doesn't do this?

I've run this through a number of search engines, and they all come back in one way or another with that kind of premium on a one-way cross-country rental.
