Family road trip from Philadelphia to Chicago

Hi,
This is the first time my family and I want to go on a 6 days road trip, in early April. We would be five people, 3 adults and 2 children, age 8 and 3. I check mapquest.com and find out that it's 750 miles from my home straight to Chicago. However, we would like to visit some attractions along the way and back again. Does anyone knows any attraction along the way there, and which places to visit while in Chicago. We have never been to Chicago before, either. If anyone can help, please!

With only 6 days for this trip, and with your desire to see some attractions along the way, you're going to have to stick pretty close to the Turnpikes for most of your trip. If you then take two days each way for the drive, you'll have two days in Chicago, and be able to make a couple of stops on the way out and back. Some possibilities that aren't too far off the Turnpikes, and that you might all enjoy, include Gettysburg National Military Park; Laurel Caverns and Fort Necessity National Battlefield; and Cuyahoga Valley National Park. These would all give the kids a chance to run as well as entertain the adults. If you're looking for more of a traditional 'attraction', there's Cedar Point an amusement park in Sandusky, OH on the shore of Lake Erie and the Auburn Cord Duesenburg Museum in Auburn, IN.

I'm afraid I've mostly just passed through Chicago, so I don't know much about what it might have to offer.

Another great car museum is the Studebaker Museum in South Bend. I believe they have just moved to a new facility. Also, Notre Dame is a great stop. Go to the student center and have an undergraduate take you for a walk around campus, no better way to get to know the Fighting Irish.

If you don't have many specific plans for Chicago, check out the Chicago Architecture Foundation and go on a guided walking tour. The histories of those buildings are fascinating. If you only have a couple of days in Chicago --- please try to go to the Museum of Science and Industry in Jackson Park on the south side of Chicago. The kids will have a great time (and learn a lot in the process!!). There's a working coal mine, a giant airplane and a submarine to investigate and crawl all over.
