The scene of one of the most notorious crimes in American history is not only open for tours. you can even spend the night. In 1892 Lizzie Borden was tried and acquitted for the brutal ax murders of her father and stepmother, although the botched investigation left lingering suspicions of her guilt. A private residence for many years, the house is now a bed and breakfast/ museum, painstakingly restored with period furnishings, as well as photographs and possessions of the Borden family and others involved in the case. You can even sit in the spot where Mr. Borden met his gruesome fate. The hour-long tours are conducted by amiable and knowledgeable guides who fascinate you with tidbits of information and evocative descriptions of the events that occurred here, and their background. If you're feeling brave enough to confront the ghosts, you can also spend the night in one of the quaint rooms, and even take a night-time tour of the house that includes sections off-limits to the day tour.

      If you go:
Tours are conducted on the hour from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. No video cameras permitted. Be aware that there is moderate stair climbing involved.
