Sea Lion Cave is home to a large breeding colony of Stellar sea lions. The visit involves a number of steps and a 208 feet elevator ride right down into the cave itself (while you're waiting, scan the sea below to see if you can spot a whale spouting). At one end of the cave are the sea lions, at the other is a superb view of the nearby Heceta Head Lighthouse. During spring and summer, the sea lions also sun themselves on the rocks outside the cave.

      If you go:
The cave is open to visitors from 9.00 am every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Ticket sales close at 4.00 pm.

If travelling the very scenic Oregon coast just north of Florence the Sea Lion Caves are a very interesting stop. Yes a bit touristy with admission fees but facilities are provided to take you down in a lift to see the full picture of the basking sea lions. You do get close to nature.

Having seen the sea lions previously this time, as the weather was excellent, I decided to climb the footpath to nearby Heceta Head Light House. Well worth the hike. My wife decided to go beachcombing on the wonderful beach.

In the picture below, taken from near the light house, you can see the Sea Lion Cave building in the far distance on the hill where it juts out to sea.
