The discovery of gold in 1878 saw White Oaks transformed from a small, isolated community into the second largest town in New Mexico with a population of as many as 5,000. Today it is virtually a ghost town: as well as old miner's buildings, an impressive schoolhouse and Cedarvale cemetery, there's also the tiny No Scum Allowed Saloon, recently voted one of the 'Best Cowboy Bars in the West'.

      If you go:
In common with many other small communities in New Mexico these days, White Oaks is redefining itself as an artists colony, with a number of studios/galleries dotted around town.
