• Sunken Trace - Port Gibson Mississippi

Spend 20 minutes or so walking along this sunken section of the original trace and you get an idea of just how challenging this journey must have been for the traders who followed the road in the 1800s. Narrow, overgrown and, when it's been raining, muddy, the contrast with today's flat two-lane blacktop and beautifully maintained grass shoulders couldn't be clearer.

      If you go:
Watch for signs at mile marker 41.5 on the Natchez Trace Parkway, north of Port Gibson and just north of Highway 18. No fee. Take your time! There's a maximum 50 mph speed limit along the 444 mile long parkway (slower in places) and historic sites like this every few miles. It's not a journey to be rushed.
