Situated close to the highest point along Trail Ridge Road (12,183 ft), the Alpine Visitor Center offers sensational views. Look out from the terrace area and you may spot elk grazing in the valley below. Or, if you're feeling up to it, there's a short trail that will take you to an elevation of 12,005 ft for wide open views to distant snow-capped mountains. Weather conditions permitting, the center is open daily from the end of May to mid-October; services include food, restrooms, store and ranger-led walks.
If you go:
Don't be surprised if you get a little out breath; if you think you're suffering the effects of altitude sickness, make your way back down to a lower level.
