• Sweetgrass Basket Makers Highway - Mount Pleasant, South Carolina

      A seven mile stretch of US Highway 17 in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina is known as "Sweetgrass Basket Makers Highway." This is where a dedicated number of artists have kept alive an African art form dating back in this country to slavery. A historic marker marks the start of the seven miles, where artists in their make-shift basket stands draw tourists and locals alike eager to watch them weave their wares and purchase these unique hand-crafted baskets.

      Each June Mount Pleasant hosts a Sweetgrass Cultural Arts Festival right up the road from the Basket Makers Highway at Memorial Waterfront Park. Show pieces are also on display at the Charleston Visitors Center and the Smithsonian Institute.
