• Stanford Mansion - Sacramento, California

Constructed a century and a half ago, this elegant four-story mansion was home to governors Leland Stanford, Fredrick Low and Henry Haight. Now part of the California State Parks system, the house has been painstakingly restored to the opulent look of its heyday, and is open for public tours. It also still serves the governor as a site to meet with visiting dignitaries. Leland Stanford, after whom the estate is named, was also a railroad tycoon and the founder of Stanford University.

      If you go:
Located near the capitol complex. Be sure to stroll through the Victorian gardens on the grounds. Tours are offered every day except major holidays, but may be canceled due to an official function. Call ahead.
