Great Lakes Seaway Trail
Sackets Harbor, NY All it takes is a car to enjoy 9 Great American Drives, writes Brendan Spiegel in Budget Travel. The Great Lakes Seaway Trail is among the nine routes that Spiegel says are well worth filling up your gas tank to explore.
The 518-mile Great Lakes Seaway Trail byway - a series of signed roads paralleling the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario, Niagara River and Lake Erie in New York and Pennsylvania - is listed second on the list of nine touring routes after Vermont's Route 100. This driving route has also been named to the Top 50 Most Comfortable Touring Drives by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
Spiegel compares the freshwater shoreline byway to 'California’s Route 1 - minus the traffic.'
He lists Eisenhower Lock on the Saint Lawrence Seaway, 28 historic lighthouses, Niagara Falls as part of the travel experience. He note that camping, birdwatching and shipwreck diving are among notable activities on the NY-PA byway and names the 3,200-acre Presque Isle State Park and its beaches as a 'don’t miss' site.
Spiegel’s 'Trip tip' is to try exploring the Great Lakes Seaway Trail's new GeoTrail using a GPS unit to locate natural and historic landmarks where 75 cache boxes are hidden.
More than 100 Great Lakes Seaway Trail themed 'Outdoor Storyteller' interpretive panels enhance the driving experience along this America’s Byway and National Recreation Trail. Popular travel themes for the Great Lakes Seaway Trail include birdwatching, the new Great Lakes Seaway Trail GeoTrail adventure to earn up to five GeoCoins, and French and Indian War and War of 1812 military heritage.
