More than a dozen wineries, twenty or more cataracts and waterfalls, scores of lakes and ponds and one of the very best routes for catching the fall foilage bloom have made this drive in upstate New York a favorite for generations of New England road trippers. Along the way are partially hidden architectural jewels and the birthplace of the women's suffrage movement.
Here are some attractions to look for along the way.
Geneva, New York (Starting point)
The road trip begins at Rose Hill Mansion, built in 1839 and preserved for tours. It is a wonderful example of Greek Revival architecture. After your visit there, you'll drive down the west side of Seneca Lake and then up the west side of Cayuga Lake. If wine tasting appeals to you, there are six along this section of Route 14: Belhurst Castle, Fox Run, Anthony Road, Miles, Fulkerson’s and Lakewood Vineyards.
Glenora Falls (mile 26)
Glenora Falls is right alongside Seneca Lake. It is only a short detour from Route 14 and it is a pretty little waterfall.
Watkins Glen Park (mile 41)
Watkins Glen is probably better known for the Grand Prix Race, but the glen is there all the time, and it is stunning. Hike along the narrow canyon under some of the falls, and around others. It is always dark and cool in the glen, so wear a jacket.
Taughannock Falls State Park (mile 60)
There are several waterfalls at Taughannock Falls State Park. The lower falls is the best at 215 feet, and it is the highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. It plunges into an wide canyon. There are hiking trails throughout the park.
Frontenac Falls (mile 65)
Just a short distance away is another nice cataract, Frontenac Falls. It is a bridal veil type falls, one that washes over the rock face in multiple misty sprays. As the road turns north, heading for Seneca Falls, you'll see the signs for at least five more wineries. They are Americana, Lucas, Hosmer, Thirsty Owl and Goose Watch Wineries. Women's Rights National Historic Park (mile 98)
The Women's Rights Park in Seneca Falls, New York celebrates the life and work of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a strong leader in the Women's suffrage movement during the late 1800s. She was not born here, but this became her lifelong home and her headquarters when she moved there in 1847 and started the suffrage movement in 1848.
