Constructed in 1694 to enable nuns to pass discreetly across the street, the Santa Catalina Arch is now the most frequently photographed landmark in the colonial city of Antigua. The clock, a nice finishing touch, was added more than a century after the arch's construction. The structure was built to join a convent where nuns lived with a school where they taught. The convent is now a hotel, and the cobbled street is a favorite spot for street life and photo ops.
If you go:
When the skies are clear, you can take an impressive shot of the distant volcano, the Volcan de Agua, looming through the arch. The arch is an especially favored spot for photos at sunset.
