• St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge - St. Marks, Florida

The drive through the refuge is paved with plenty of pull-offs to observe nature. There are many kinds of wildlife to observe. I spotted a small alligator at one pull-off. He was about five foot and just baking in the sun with his head on the shallow launch for kayaks or canoes. He watched me but made no move to flee or attack. Lots of birds were flittering around. I saw egrets, herons, and lots of crows. Quite a few I couldn't identify. The drive out to the lighthouse is worth it even though it's temporarily closed.

      If you go:
Refuge is open from sunrise to sunset. Visitor's Center is open weekdays 8 to 4, weekends 10 to 5.There's a toll booth to collect the $5 entry fee, but when it's closed pay entry fee or show your national parks pass at the Visitor's Center.
