Florida Caverns State Park is the only Florida state park where you can visit underground caves. A guide leads you deep underground and there are strategically placed colored lights to emphasize the beauty of the cave. Besides the main cave on the tour, there are small caves that were once used as hideouts by the Seminoles during the Seminole Wars. The caves formed millions of years ago when Florida was covered by seawater. As the water receded, the limestone that make up Florida's bedrock was eroded creating the caves. The CCC built the park in the 1930s.
If you go:
The park is open 8 a.m. until sundown, 365 days a year. Cave tours are available 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. CST, Thursday through Monday. Park entry fee is $5 per vehicle. Cave Tour Fees, children 2 and under free, ages 3 to 12 are $5 per person, and ages 13 and up are $10.75 per person.
