You've no doubt heard plenty about the Mayan ruins at Chichen Itza, but those at Uxmal are at least as impressive, and are less crowded and less touristy. One of the best preserved of Mayan heritage sites, Uxmal showcases some amazing architectural detail. The iconic Pyramid of the Magician is one of many structures that give the visitor a reasonably complete glimpse of what the village looked like in its heyday. As a bonus, you will see plenty of iguanas, some of them quite large. There is also an optional light and sound show in the evening.

      If you go:
Open daily. Admission is about 20 dollars per person, with an additional charge for a guided tour. It's easy and inexpensive to catch a bus to Uxmal from Merida. And while the official word is that there is no return bus, and you must instead take a bus back to the town of Muna, and then back to Merida, there is actually a direct bus back that you can catch just across the street at about 3:30, and you can pay the fare to the driver. In case you miss all transportation connections, there is a nice hotel onsite.

I took a road trip through Mexico a few years back, and we took in no less than 14 Mayan cities. (I have a degree in anthropology, and I go nuts over that sort of thing). Of all the sites we visited, Uxmal was probably my favorite. The restoration was masterfully done, and the result is one of the best preserved, most aesthetically spectacular ancient ruin, anywhere on the planet. The Governor's Palace, one of the larger buildings, is considered by many to be one of the greatest architectural achievements of all time! Let's just say it's worth a look!

Definitely. I've only seen photos of other Mayan sites, but Uxmal is hard to top.

I've had quite a lot to say about all that in my blog: Rick's Maya Archive
If you're interested in Mayan cities you might enjoy some of the posts (not to mention the photos! ;-)
