• Paseo de Montejo and Monument to the Fatherland - Merida, Yucatan

      Monument to the Fatherland
In contrast to the narrow, old-fashioned streets that you'll find in most of Merida, Paseo de Montejo is a broad, bustling, modern thoroughfare lined with hotels, restaurants, cafes, boutiques and historic buildings. Its crown jewel is Monument to the Fatherland, an enormous work of sculpture depicting the history of the city and the region, from the Mayans up to modern times. Sculptor Romulo Rozo, who fashioned this opus, is buried beside it. In addition to providing a fantastic setting for photos, the Monument is sometimes the scene of political demonstrations or other public gatherings.

      If you go:
The Monument can be accessed at any time free of charge. Be sure also to visit the City Of Merida Museum, where you'll see exhibits honoring notable locals including Rozo. There's even a small model of the monument that he used in sculpting it..
