Ma Johnson's Hotel - McCarthy, Alaksa

Ma Johnson's Hotel is situated at the heart of McCarthy, a remote community made famous by the Discovery semi-reality / documentary series, "Edge of Alaska." The town serves as a base for exploring Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the largest of them all. The hotel itself is packed full of character, all squeaky floorboards, old furniture, tiny bedrooms and shared bathrooms. It's comfortable rather than luxurious but it's also a place you'll end up wishing you'd stayed longer.

If you go:
Be sure to pre-book a table at the Salmon and Bear Restaurant opposite. This is a fine dining restaurant specialising in locally reared duck and pork, Copper River Red Salmon, and other Alaskan seafood including halibut and black cod.
