You don't have to travel to Switzerland to hear, or even play, an alphorn. There are alphorn, or alpenhorn, clubs in the U.S. that perform on these enormous and peculiar wind instruments. One such group, the Sierra Alphorns, is based in the Reno-Tahoe area. Not only do they present performances, but they meet to practice in public locations where you can come to watch. And if you're game, and feeling up to the challenge, they will gladly invite you to step up and play along with them. No, you don't have to invest in your own alphorn to do it. They always bring along a spare.

      If you go:
The address given is for Davis Creek Regional Park, near Carson City, where the Sierra Alphorns meet to practice once a month during warmer weather. The park itself is worth exploring.
