The first of California's historic missions, founded in 1769, Mission San Diego de AlcalA, is still going strong, with a schedule of daily masses. And for the general public, there are tours of this historically significant structure. Note that only one of the bells, the one with a crown on top, is original to the mission. The present building is actually the fifth to occupy this site, and is a 1931 reconstruction of the 1813 building that was destroyed by fire.

      If you go:
Visitor Center and gift shop open daily, 9 to 4:30. School group tours are scheduled on weekdays at 9:00, 11:00 and 1:00. Adult tours are self-guided. Some adult tours may be taken weekends by appointment.
