The USS Midway is a former naval aircraft carrier that had a lengthy stint of service, from 1945 to 1992. It was the largest ship in the world for about 10 years, and it was the first ship too large to fit through the Panama Canal, and has seen a great deal of historic action. Today it's a museum to its own glory days, and even has a flight deck with dozens of vintage aircraft. Knowledgeable docents provide tours to many of the ship's quarters, and a rather realistic dummy crew mans some of the stations. There are special programs offered, and you can even spend the night aboard the vessel in a sailor's 'rack'.

      If you go:
Open daily 10 to 4 except for major holidays. It's a good idea to head for the flight deck command center, known as The Island, as early in your day as possible, since those tours have limited space. On the opposite side of where you board the ship, don't overlook the giant color statue depicting a famous World-War II photo, and a sculpture garden paying tribute to Bob Hope, enhanced by a recording of him entertaining the troops.
