Atlanta is one of several sites worldwide to host this annual gathering that brings together friends, family and total strangers to create an atmosphere of good will and hope. The highlight, of course, is the lighting and launching of water lanterns. each hand decorated and inscribed with wishes, hopes or whatever by the attendees. There are also food, music, and an opportunity for attendees to take the stage and tell an inspiring personal story. The ecologically friendly lantern, made of paper and wood, is included with admission, along with a marker for decorating it. Festivities begin in mid-afternoon.

      If you go:
The Atlanta event is held at Jim R. Miller Park, which has plenty of free parking. Bring along some extra markers for added color for your lantern. You also may want a blanket or folding chair to sit on, and you are welcome to bring your own food. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be rescheduled.
