Fort Taber Park is both a place of historic importance and a work in progress. The site of military installations dating back to the Civil War era, the park's most prominent feature is Fort Rodman, which is closed to the public while it is awaiting restoration, but still is is fascinating to examine from the outside. There is a military museum on the premises, and the park is the site of occasional military reenactments. Other times, it's a good place to walk, bike, jog, picnic, fish or swim and take note of historic markers.
If you go:
Park is free and always open. Museum is open daily from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. except on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and Easter.
