With over 250,000 square feet, Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art offers a sprawling collection of mind-blowing cutting edge art that appeals to all the senses. Yes, sometimes you can even smell the materials artists use. With its ample floor space, it can mount exhibits like Trenton Doyle Hancock's Mind Of The Mound/ Critical Mass, which incorporates a huge collection of toys and games into numerous original pieces of art. In addition to visual arts, MASS MoCA offers performances of music, dance, and theater as well as film and interactive activities that might include construction projects geared to kids and kids at heart, and virtual reality. The museum is housed in an old building that was once the headquarters of an electric company, and it's fun to spot how traces of the facility's past life have been retained and repurposed.

      If you go:
Open daily during the summer 10 to 6, with some late night hours. During the winter, open 10 to 5 every day except Tuesday. Closed for Christmas and Thanksgiving. Some participatory activities may require reservation well in advance. Plenty of free parking. Dining available on premises.
