Spurred on nearly 4 decades ago by a racist slur about African-Americans neglecting their yards, Pearl Fryar began planting reclaimed plants around his property, and trimming them into artistic shapes. And he's still doing it, as well as adorning his yard with sculpture he's made from recycled objects, emblazoning the messages of love and peace. With no previous training or experience, he's won awards, and has been the subject of a documentary, "A Man Named Pearl." And he's drawn admirers to his garden from all over the world. You can view not only what horticultural wizardry he's wrought on his own property, but on that of his neighbors. He's definitely taken good care of his yard, and improved the neighborhood.

      If you go:
Gardens open for free tours all year, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 to 4. Public restrooms on premises and parking lot across the street. If you call Pearl with questions about your visit, do so during daytime only.
