Situated at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers, Harpers Ferry is a genuinely multifaceted destination, with restored historic buildings, museums, extraordinary scenery, extensive Civil War history (changing hands eight times), the halfway point of the Appalachian Trail, and even Lewis and Clark connections. The Lower Town is the most visited area and home to John Brown's Fort (pictured) where he and his followers sought refuge during their ill-fated raid of 1859.
