The world famous piece of granite marks the spot where the Pilgrims disembarked from the Mayflower in December 1620 and first set foot on the New World. Except of course it doesn't. First of all, they actually made landfall at the tip of Cape Cod the previous month. And even when they did move on to Plymouth, there's no historical evidence to suggest they even noticed a particular rock. However, a century or so later, 94 year old church elder Thomas Faunce claimed this to be the spot where the Pilgrims had arrived and the rest, as they say, is dubious history.

      If you go:
Despite its lack of provenance, surprisingly diminutive size, and the fact that it has been broken in half, lost chunks to souvenir hunters and relocated, it's still worth a visit so famous is the mythology.
