The Vermont State House is not only one of the country's oldest state capitols but also without question one of the most picturesque. Completed in 1859 and situated against a backdrop of wooded hills, its architecture - like many other capitol buildings - reflects that of the nation's Capitol. Its interior is equally impressive with many well preserved original interiors and furnishings (the Senate Chamber's 30 black walnut desks and chairs were first used by the 1859 Vermont Senate), as well as impressive artworks.

      If you go:
The State House is open to visitors Monday to Friday: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm all year round, and on Saturdays 11:00 am 3:00 pm from July 1 to October 30. Guided tours are available every 30 minutes; self-guided audio tours are also available.
