You get an inkling from the entrance arch composed of shovels that what's inside might be intriguing, and it doesn't disappoint. Consisting of 100 acres, this arboretum includes some 22,000 trees and plants of an astonishing variety. Many of them, such as a grove of redwoods, you would not expect to find in this area. These plants are used for research by the adjacent university, but they are available for the public to view and enjoy. Take a stroll on the 3.5 mile path beside a creek, and you will be enthralled. There are also historic features like an ancient oak once used as a landmark, and traces of a wagon train trail.

      If you go:
Open 24 hours every day, free. Parking, however, can be a challenge, at least without paying a $9 charge. Davis itself is a vibrant, colorful university town worth exploring.
