• Picacho Peak State Park - Picacho, Arizona

      Besides hiking up this distinctive 1500-foot peak, visitors can camp, enjoy spring wildflowers and visit Memorial Loop with interpretive signs and plaques about the Civil War battle fought here. The Union lost three soldiers but the skirmishes in Arizona stopped the Confederate battalion's march to California and access to a port. Two trails ascend to the peak with other shorter, easier trails also available.

      If you go:
      Other than a stop off Interstate 10 to visit the Civil War memorial, this park is best skipped in hot summer months. Two trails ascend to the peak but both require a strenuous climb up the last mile, which is steep and twisting, with steel cables (gloves are recommended) anchored into the rock in places where the surface is bare. Camping, picnic areas are available. Admission. Hours are 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Electric sites for RVs and tents with wifi (extra fee) can be reserved as can ramadas.

        If you can go in the springtime after a wet winter, the park is loaded with golden poppies. It's beautiful! Picacho Peak is also a "landmark" because of its
        unusual shape (post 1).
