Railtown is not your typical state park, it's devoted to preserving the rich history of California's railroads. There are several functioning vintage steam engines and railroad cars, stored and maintained in a working roundhouse, one of the few surviving roundhouses in the nation. You can also take rides on these trains, in a 6-mile excursion through gold country, even passing by the Mother Lode. These trains, especially a classic engine known as Number 3, will look familiar because they have appeared in some 200 films and TV series going all the way back to 1919. These include "Bonanza", "Death Valley Days", "Unforgiven" and "Back to the Future III". The wooden water tower was an icon in the TV series "Petticoat Junction". Look for a little building with a display of photos and props from some of the many film shoots here.

      If you go:
Train rides are offered Saturdays and Sundays from April through October at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Free parking. Jamestown is a colorful historic town worth taking some time to explore.
